Topic: Screening Ethnic Medicinal Plants For Possible Activity Against Blood Cancer Cells Of The CML (Chronic Myeloid Leukemia) Type

What is Cancer?
Cell division in the human body is a well controlled process, in which the number of newly produced cells is in balance with the number of dying ones. Sometimes the control system weakens and then human cells start growing and dividing out of control, creating undefined spread of undesirable cells which can turn into tumors spreading in the human body and causing a disease.
A normal cell can turn into a cancerous cell as a result of one of several genetic changes (mutations).
Blood Cancer of the CML (Chronic Myeloid Leukemia) type is a disease of the tissues producing blood cells. This cancer can appear at any age for reasons unknown, but contact with carcinogen chemicals and exposure to radioactive radiation can accelerate the appearance of the disease and intensify it.
Treatment with medicinal plants is a known and efficient branch of supplementary medicine for cancer patients. Such plants have a huge potential for drug research and development. Ethno-botanic screening of plants, and research performed in Migal and in other research centers have resulted in a significant number of plants with anti-cancer activity.

The proposed research
Main purpose:
To examine the activity and effect of extracts from medicinal plants on Blood Cancer of the CML type.
