The Association has initiated a special activity among immigrants from Ethiopia, at the immigrants' absorption center in Ayelet Hashachar. This activity, which dealt with wild life in Israel, was directed at children of the 10-13 year old age group, with the additional aim of involving their parents. Three such groups were set up.
The teacher brought a different animal, typical of our region, to each meeting, and the animal became the central topic of the meeting. The children learn about its habitat and life cycle, how it obtains its food, what its enemies are and how it protects or camouflages itself. In this way, we hope to establish and encourage a bond between the children and the flora and fauna of the country in general and this region in parituclar. The program includes descriptions of historical sites and field trips. The children learn songs and poems about the animal, bringing in the elements of language and local lore.
This is the first time we have undertaken a project of this sort. We think that working with this sector of the population is of primary importance, and for this reason we are putting a great deal of effort into it. |
