Uri Marchaim, Ph.D.

Uri Marchaim is a member of Kibbutz Kfar Giladi, in the Upper Galilee, Israel. He was born in Jerusalem in 1938 and received his higher education in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem - B.Sc. degree in Chemistry, M.Sc. degree in Biochemistry and Ph.D. in Agricultural Biochemistry. Subsequently he conducted post-doctoral research at the Rockefeller University, New York, carrying out research on biochemistry of tumor cells, and in 1984 worked in Battle Laboratories in Columbus Ohio.

For over 20 years Uri has conducted research in Methanogenic Anaerobic Digestion (generation of Biogas) of agricultural wastes of cow manure, poultry manure, crop wastes, slaughterhouses wastes, instant coffee wastes etc., for the production of alternative energy, food supplements, plant substrates and hormones. He wrote for the FAO organization two reviews on Biogas. Uri also organized and was the chairman of the FAO Workshop on "Biogas technology as an environmental solution to pollution", in Migal, with delegates from 18 countries. He received status of Research Scientist A (research equivalent to Professor) in 1991, and in 1997 was appointed "Adjunct Associate Professor" at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Uri is the author and co-author of over 60 articles in journals and books.

In addition to his scientific research, Uri has a longtime interest in education. He established the "Association for the Advancement of Science Education in Galilee" in 1988, which is involved in enrichment courses, programs included in the curriculum and teachers’ in-service courses, to students from over 46 schools in Israel. Uri is involved in international join projects through telecommunication with several countries. The "Interdisciplinary-Project-Oriented Learning" program provided him in 1993 with the "Rotschild prize for Education" in the Israeli Parliament. He was also involved in several education projects in Brazil, the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean.
