Name: Alyona Migunova
School/Institute: Moscow school # 444
Position: I graduated from Moscow Pedagogical Institute as a biology teacher. I worked at the research institute and received my PhD degree in human physiology. From 1988 to 1995 I worked at the Moscow Institute of New Technologies in Education. Our group was involved in development of science curriculums for Russian schools. I also participated in developing the Russian version of the Kids Network project, and took part in the development of the Global Laboratory project with TERC. I still teach at two schools in Moscow, teaching a few courses of English as a second language and some biology in English and the Kids Network project.
City and Country: Moscow, Russia
Proposed Projects: 1. Birds
Birds are very easy for kids to observe, even in the big cities. They can identify as many different species as possible, and describe their appearance and behavior, take pictures and make drawings. As a second stage , students living in different places share their observations and data, make comparisons and try to look for similar patterns. The kids can go to their local zoo to find the birds described by the other participants, and decide whether their partners made a good description. As a third stage the kids could examine birds migrations routes and times.
2. Designing an environmentally safe community.
The students must plan a community that will be environmentally safe; either their own town, or an imaginary community. They should think about many aspects such as climate and landscape, sources of energy and utilization of trash, and working places for the population. Students from different countries could work together on a joint design, with each school being responsible for one part of it. Alternatively each team could work on its own project, sharing them and discussing different features of their plans. They could use computers to make maps, schemes and graphs.
