Name: Robert Madar
School/Institute: Crescent Valley High
Position: I teach in a comprehensive high school in Oregon, and have had considerable experience in curriculum development. During the past 7 years I have developed two courses that deal with field studies. I have also done original research in graduate school, and have 2 publications in journals and a chapter in a book. I received a MacUllife fellowship for the 97-98 school year, and will use it help me to further develop the biology program here in Corvallis.
City and Country: Corvallis, Oregan USA
Proposed Project: The program enables students an oppotunity to work on ecological projects that benefit the local community. This program has been in place for the past three years, and projects have ranged from writing a field guide about the biological and cultural resources of a local city park to providing detailed information on ecologically sensitive sites to city managers. I am currently participating in a sister cities program with Uzhgorod, Ukraine. The overall goal of this project is to encourage students from the Ukraine to take an active role in solving some of the serious ecological problems in their city, and to exchange ideas and information between the two groups of students. During the 97-98 school year, there will be an exchange program, and students from Uzhgorod will be taking an ecological methods class from me. One of the goals of this project is to help students improve their skills at exchanging information and ideas over the Internet.
